Gourcuff & Diarra Against Serbia

By: Jennifer | September 10th, 2008

I couldn’t watch the game as I was in school, but reports (and friends) say that Gourcuff had a fantastic 90 minute showing against Serbia in this qualifier (my only regret is that Stankovic was hurt..) His return to international football is a fantastic and I must say that Domenech did France a great favour by calling him up (and I don’t doubt that he was rewarded.) He was so good that ESPN call him “every inch the playmaker France have needed since the retirement of Zinedine Zidane” (now if only they’d stop calling everyone the new Zidane, seriously.)

The kits are also very ugly.

Diarra also had 8 minutes of playing time, coming in on the 82nd minute for Govou.

MARSEILLES THIS WEEKEND. They lead Bordeaux a total for 5 points and 6 positions. I hope Bordeaux will get out of this ruck they’re in.

    Gourcuff was amazing, seriously.

I know he’s only 22 and will be inconsistent and can’t do this every time, but for today, he deserved that “Next Zidane” label.

I think people are praising him a bit too much. He was good taking the set pieces. In open play I think he lacked that little bit of confidence. But he definitely improved as the match went on. From start of second half till France conceded he did justice to the ‘Next Zidane’ label for sure. But to be like Zizou he still has a long way to go.

The kits are so, so foul it’s hard for me to see anything else.

Gourcuff always had the talent but Milan was the wrong move for him and now that he is back at Bordeaux he is showing his talent again!

I hope he NEVER GOES BACK /selfish

I know he deserves it, but I just don’t think people should be tagged by something like that. it’s kinda like you can’t deviate from it. (And hey, he might even be better ;P )

And this is me, very pointedly not noticing the state of his shorts.

I think Gorcuff showed more in his second half than Samir Nasri ever did in thirteen games. And I love Samir Nasri. But Gourcuff was such a natural it was scary. Let’s see who gets to play next time. I’m very excited to see Ben Arfa back on the team.

I think the big different between Nasri (and also Benzema) is that the aforementioned duo cannot deliver many times on big games. Gourcuff has a kind of consistency in his performance that just shows, and part of that maybe that he’s a bit older..
To have all those players vying for a place in midfield will be very interesting.
