2008 In Review: The Biggest

By: Jennifer | January 1st, 2009

^L’Equipe’s team of the year. Bordeaux’s only one two players off from Lyon!

Biggest FlopDiego Placente
Free transfer or not, I think this one is unanimous. It’s like buying another CFA player except much older and not as talented.

Biggest Diappointment: Mathieu Jérémy
It’s too bad he did not sign. He would have been a great replacement for Jurietti. Bordeaux still shows interest in him since he is not extending with Toulouse, but my guess is that he is leaving for the Premiership.

AND

Yoan Gouffran
Surprise? No, not really. His performance was really disappointing. I prefer not to speak more.

Biggest Promise: Gabriel Obertan
Gaby has all the makings of a star (in the strict non-womanizing, non-Drama Queen, excellent footballer way). A loan away will allow him he the experience he needs to excel. FC Nantes really wants him now, too. Not surprising.

Biggest Invention: GirondinsTV/GirondinsMag
Uhhh, when can I get my hands on those?

Biggest Injury: Ulrich Ramé
We couldn’t fix him in time, it certainly cost a few, albeit important, games.

Also there’s Wendel..more of a mental thing, but he’s back and I’m glad for it.

Biggest Performer: Yoann Gourcuff
This one’s been expected by everyone. Raking in pageviews everywhere, who can beat that?! *Cue naked jokes….or banana hammock*
(I also like to acknowledge the consistent, solid services of Diarra and Diawara. Without you we’d be even shittier than we think we are.)

Biggest Break: Kevin Olimpa
It’s not like a really impressive start, but definitely a shocker that Valverde would break a few games after Ramé breaks. I think he’ll become a great keeper if he’s given the chance, unlike Valverde, who scares the living shit out of me.

Biggest Matchup: Lyon – Bordeaux
This has been the best match up this season. The games have been pretty exciting so far, and I hope the next one will be just a good (and hopefully we’ll win one that actually counts).

Biggest Influence: Fernando Cavenaghi
I’m a big fan of this guy. I’m a even bigger fan of his finishing and the charisma he has on the field. This is one player who can change the course of a game even as a sub.

Biggest Loss: Roma 2-0 Bordeaux
It’s been a long time coming huh…it was terrible to watch, even worse than that Chelsea game. Well there’s next year..and UEFA Cup :D

Biggest Moment: Beating Lyon
This blog started off with a bang! That was such an intense game. Moar moar moar!

Biggest Hope: SIGN YOANN “MONEY” GOURCUFF
Self explanatory.

So, what are your biggest(s) this season? Don’t say something dirty.

“When you are lucky to have in your workforce a player who score goals, you try to keep him. Now, if a club wants a player of Bordeaux and 20 million euros is on the table to get, I sincerely believe that I do not know everything. Even if I want to keep him, we’ll explain that 20 million euros is a lot of money and it is better to have two sardines grilled a pigeon flying.” – Blanc

    biggest surprise: gourcuff
biggest disappointment : blanc, with the team we have, i expect more from the team both in europe and ligue 1, we haven’t beaten the likes of OM,PSG, lyon. i think its the coach to blame

imo this team has the second in depth team behind lyon. we should be winning with consistency and not bet on lyon losing

I don’t, am I the only one who thinks that Gouffran was a huge disappointment this season? Partly due to Blanc, but he should be well on track to amounting to at least half his goal count from last year. He hasn’t shown any of the same form that he put on display with Caen. He only has one assist to his name from the seven he had the year before and the ten goals. I don’t think has been a real threat to any of our opponents at all this year.

Placente is a different story, he’s a quality player but very mistake prone. He’s very similar to Heinze in that regard. I think most of us who knew him from when he was at Leverkusen had expected it. I think, when your at such a bigger club like Real Madrid your able to take such risks as to playing a player like Placente (Heinze) because you can sustain or endure the mistakes much more with the world class center-halves supporting. I don’t know if I would call him a flop, per se but maybe we expected a little more from what we got. And not having the managers confidence make Placente’s situation a little better for the team. He’s quality back up anything other than big games.

Gaston, you have point about us not being able to beat the title competitors and some blame should be put on Blanc especially in Europe, however I do not not entirely agree…

I’ll reply a little later, right now I’m fucking tired.

Tremoulinas has always been a pleasure to watch when given the shot, he can get up and down the wing very nice and hardly leaves many holes when he does get foward. In his last game he set up the game tying goal.

(Although I have to confess that I’m never sad when Gomis scores. He got sooooo scapegoated in Euros.)

Maybe it’s just me, but their kits are almost as unsightly as the Perrin.

(Well The One Who Called Him Up also took a beating. But hey, it was not a very good call up…and I really couldn’t agree with giving him as much playing time as he got in the Euros.)

You’re always so optimistic..but I guess there’s always something else to look forward to.

Blanc has given Obertan and Ducasse the green light to leave on loan. Let’s see who gets to snap them up :D

    EDIT: http://www.mercato365.com/infos-clubs/bordeaux/article_286444_La-surprise-Obertan.shtml
Obertan is going to FC Lorient till the rest of the season!
    That was rather unexpected..

This is good news for Obertan, but I don’t really like (Papy) Gourcuff, as a manager he has no guts. He’s not a risk taker (as long as he play Obertan every game for at least 70′ I’m happy).

Blanc said he’ll remain in Sudouest reported that Blanc will remain in France and talks will begin between him and Bordeaux in late January. He’ll sign depending on the project and not for the money. I don’t know what his intentions are, he said he wants to perfect his skills as a coach, yet it seems as if he wants to let talks drag on forever… He’d better stay!

Jennifer, how did you edit you post?

Ahahaha, the three Brazilians were stuck in Paris because of the weather. It’s funny that everywhere it’s snowmaggedon and it was raining in Canada. Shit, I jinxed it………

Obertan’s presentation video. I’m gonna watch it soon, but school’s too stressful right now.

It must have been nice for them, Brazilians love the cold… it’s been unseasonably cold in Europe and and the constant change in temperature here in Canada (from heavy precipitation then to positive then negative temperatures) has been quite destructive lo these past couple of years, especially in the rural areas around the lakes and rivers. I would be nice to have winter tires…

Obertan was called up for the OL game, he may get a run in the second half as a sub. And if he’s lucky he’ll Start!

Big game this weekend! Finally L1 is back, the wait was killing me.

Are you serious? You just missed the game of the season, everyone I complain about (except Wendel) was on the bench, our best XI was fielded!

You got to watch the encore in the morning (I can’t spoil it for you/tape it if you can), or I’ll tell you about it tomorrow (if you don’t watch it)…

Hey Jennifer, I spotted your comments on Goal.coms article entitled, “Yoann Gourcuff Drops Bordeaux Stay Hint”

    Jennifer Toronto
I don’t think any of the Girondins fans expect him to stay too long. Though it’ll be nice to keep him for the next two years. He isn’t the new Zidane, he’s Gourcuff. The way he’s playing right now, there’s no way to stop him.

If Gourcuff leaves Bordeaux to any other team besides Real Madrid or Juve I’ll be extremely disappointed…

LOL, I only comment on Bordeaux stuff on Goal. I can usually spot people I know here on the Offside..like Nikola from the Serbia WC blog.

I’m convinced he’ll stay for at least a year. Then when he goes off to play at like Real I’ll be proud of him :D

(And no Juve..it doesn’t go with his complexion <_<)

My appoloegies Jennifer, remember when I said I didn’t like Ibra because he wasn’t as crucial as he should be in big games. I change my mind, he has been performing at an incredible high and if finally living up to his potential, but know all he has to do is prove that he can deliver Inter against Man Utd. (pleassseee knock them out)then he’ll get my vote for Ballon d’Or behind Messi.
    —–

And the game, I won’t go into to much detail but it was probably our best game all year. We came into the match with physically and strong and really controlled the midfield battle. You see, how we usually hold possession of the ball with and really lack an direct approach to the game, not last game we really looked to attack.

Henrique, Diawara and Chalmé were rock solid at the back they let very little by them althou in the first few minutes the gave up two really good opertunites to Giuly. Trémoulinas had nothing to do really he got involved when he could but like i always say he’s a pleasure to watch.

The midfield partnership between Jussie, Gourcuff, Chamakh and Wendel (who had a few good moments himself) were great, they had some magnificent link-up plays between each other (combinations of quick passes and of the ball runs) which really opened up PSG defense. The service to Cave was really unbelievable. Credit to Jussie who I thought was important even though he didn’t have his best game but he made those really hurtful runs that opened up the field for Gourcuff. Gourcuff, I think was the one that provided him with a really great opportunity in front of goal.

There was something this line up that I haven’t seen from our team before, I don’t know if it was Gourcuff playing superbly or the forward runs by Jussie and the width Trémoulinas provided that contributed to that great display. I hope we keep this up, we can only grow more confident and go forward from here.

    Sorry for the poor summery.

p.s. Diarra was an absolute beast out there.
