We Have A Trophy!

By: Jennifer | August 3rd, 2008

I know this picture does not say “OMG BORDEAUX BEAT LYON TO WIN TROPHY!!!”, but it is adorable and I love it.

For a little après match. My thoughts: definitely a great game. Lovely to see Bordeaux domination, and the form that Blanc have been working on for most of the summer. I think that not lacking any players to Euros and vacation (except Cavenaghi) is fantastic, and starting the training early definitely has its peaks.

I think the unanimous man of the match is Marouane Chamakh. He worked tirelessly throughout the match, carving out shots again and again at the goal. It was simply unlucky for him not to get a goal this game, and both Bordeaux and Chamakh deserved one.

First half: Domination domination domination. There was an obvious call for a penalty when Lloris brought Chamakh down in the area, but was denied (I didn’t watch this part so I’m not sure.) So many shots on goal in this half, mostly courtesy of Chamakh. I’ll also put in here that Gourcuff was simple wonderful, feeding the ball to Chamakh upfront. Freekicks were split between Wendel and Gourcuff, who both did pretty well. Lyon didn’t have many chances in this half. Defense looked well…but again, couldn’t tell.

Second half: Lyon started getting back into the game, creating a few chances. Both Benzema and Baros almost scored, but they just didn’t have that luck. The backline was pretty shabby, I don’t know if they were tired or simply incompetent, but they really could not close the space down enough to shutdown the Lyon attack, and considering they had 3 strikers upfront, it was quite dangerous.(May I also say that Puel’s attempt at putting Bodmer in CB failed and I hope he never does it again for the good of his team.)

Penalties: (If Bordeaux had been awarded that first penalty, it might not have come to these tense minutes of pure pain.) When Cavenaghi missed that first penalty, my heart SANK. From his performance after being subbed in, it was obvious that he is not fit. For Lloris to have saved two penalties, I must say it was extremely lucky for Cris to have missed. Ramé looked solid in goal, and I can’t ask for better.

ETA: I’m dumb and forgot the highlights reel

Photos after the jump.

(I delight in this a little, forgive me Lyon)

The one who most deserved it.

    Hey Jen,
Great review. i was watching the match streamed aso and missed the chamakh denied penalty. but i found a highlight of it and a few more along with the penalty shots. (http://www.footytube.com/page/2/) i think chamakh got a little lucky at the begining but he absolutly burned them afterwards.

I watched the highlights on OLTV, and Hugo did catch Chamakh, but he made such a meal of it that the referee might have swallowed his whistle cos he was so offended by the drama. (Lloris looked to have caught one foot, and Chamakh did, like, a complete flip and went down like he’d been shot.)

Just based on the highlights, I totally agree with you on Chamakh (who could have been sitting around sucking his thumb outside of the clips I saw, I realize), and Fabi’s awful hair.

I’m wondering if this will finally be Chamakh’s breakout season and he scores 15-20 goals. Or maybe not.

I doubt Chamakh will ever score 15 goals in a season! He’s never been a good finisher and I doubt he’ll ever be. He’s better at keeping the ball, provoking the defense to create some space, taking the ball in the air..

I know this trophy isn’t supposed to mean anything, but still…I cry. It’s been a good luck charm for Lyon, so I hope it doesn’t transfer that luck to Bordeaux.
