The Big One: Bordeaux vs Chelsea

By: Jennifer | September 14th, 2008

I thought I’d get started on this early while I still have time. I think I’ve been anticipating next week ever since the Champions League draw ( but also because The Office and CSI:Miami are coming back. That’s what she said.)

Just to recap yesterday’s game, it was a great game, an electric first half with two goals. Second half was kind of boring (my streams kept dying, that’s probably why.) What worries me that is we are now a lowly 10th place, with 1 win out of 4 games. This slow start is feeling very very long. The only good news is that Chamakh is on FIRE, Gourcuff is consistent, and Placente ain’t too shabby.

Le groupe against Chelsea :
Ramé, Valverde – Diawara, Henrique, Jurietti, Placente, Planus – Diarra, Ducasse, Fernando, Gourcuff, Wendel, Sertic, Traoré – Bellion, Cavenaghi, Chamakh, Gouffran, Obertan.

If you haven’t already noticed, Blanc did not save players for Chelsea. Gourcuff, especially, played almost the full 90 minutes yesterday, as well as against Serbia in the WC qualifier with France. The only player I expect to start against Chelsea that did not play is Jurietti.

Now I’m not a master of tactics or on formations, so bear with me here. This is what I expect:
Ramé
Placente - Diawara - Jurietti
Wendel - Fernando - Diarra - Gourcuff
Gouffran
Chamakh - Cavenaghi

Probably wrong, please correct me. I never remember fully where they all play.

I’ve been quite disappointed with Gouffran so far, so maybe Bellion may start (I thought he did very well when he came on). I loveeeeee how Cavenaghi, Chamakh, Wendel and Gourcuff are feeding off each other, the attack (and midfield) looks fantastic. As usual, my only concerns are with the defense, but I’m sure with the experience of Placente, they have hold down the fort. A little worried with Ramé’s potential fitness — he’s not the youngest and the game is only 3 days after a scary, heart attack inducing game.

Prediction: I’ll let Chelsea have this one, 2-1. Please let me be wrong.

cant wait for the game tomorrow….i found highlights to the marseille game. (http://www.megavideo.com/?v=44HIUGYS). We had alot of oppurtunites and Cavenaghi had a great strike toward the end. but they got too many through balls and we got lucky.

I think I may have missed something, but why isn’t Cavenaghi starting?

Bordeaux’s of lack experience is what is killing them. they haven’t been exposed to different types of european style of play, you can tell they can’t keep up with english style of play and they don’t have the talent to make chelsea play their way

My god, I just got out of class and I see this 2-0 scoreline. What he isn’t starting? I think Blanc might do a tag team thing with the strikers. Usually Cavenaghi don’t do full games.

Oh I see the goals. That defense is ugly. DEAR PLACENTE SAVE US.

I think Chelsea is a bit too one touch for Bordeaux. I don’t have any doubt that the attacking force will have any troubles should we be able to keep possession.

Jennifer, it’s been even uglier than the scoreline indicates. Bordeaux can’t hold onto the ball for three consecutive passes, and they’ve shut down Gourcuff almost completely.

I’d feel better about this if Anelka and Malouda were having good games, but they’ve been essentially invisible. :-(

that didn’t look too pretty. Don’t damage our precious Chamakh when he’s finally performing

Yikes, I just saw the scoreline. I was expecting Bordeaux’s defense to hold up better. But Chelsea is the team of the long ball, and they have the best midfield in Europe, if you ask me, so keeping possession against them is tough for any team.

At this point I am terribly impressed by Rame’ and thinking of replacing the whole backline

Obertan on for Gouffran and Cavenaghi (finally) on for Chamakh. I don’t see how Obertan will help, but Gouffran has been under performing for a long time. But still, nerves will probably get to Obertan.

Omar, at least they’re not the one with a splash of pink right? I think of course we’ll look shit against a team of this caliber (sadly)

3-0 for Malouda. I rather it be him, I guess..

Yeah, the consolation I’m taking from this is that Malouda and Anelka both scored. I’m really happy for both of them — their self-confidence took such a beating last year.

P.S. Has Malouda filled out this year? His uniform, especially the jersey, fits differently. Not that I…um…notice these things. Or anything.

My consolation is Roma losing. Yep, that really works for me. I’ll gloat for a bit now..

So this is my concern. Bordeaux have a better defense than Lyon, right? And yet they fell 4-0 to Chelsea. I don’t even want to think what will happen tomorrow (though at least Fiorentina aren’t Chelsea).
