Say What?
By: Jennifer | August 28th, 2009Wait, let me dig up some ancient history and pretend that we are still as glamourous as we were then.
Maybe this will happen again? After all this is a league winning squad as well. Maybe we’re back to the good ole’ days with Blanc.
SO. Juventus, Bayern and Maccabi Haifa. What’s the plan?
Like Blanc, I completely expected this draw. After Roma and Chelsea (and the surprisingly good Cluj last year), Bordeaux managed to draw another group we probably can’t get out of (and god forbid we end up last in). Maybe it’s my pessimissm or perhaps it’s the fact that Blanc and I see eye to eye (and heart to heart), because hey, it can’t get worse right? I think secretly I believe we can get through but realistically I hope we’ll have a good run in UEFA Cup.
But wait, is that the sound of one hand clapping, or is it the ridiculous fact that the two unlikeliest teams to get through are the champions of their respective leagues? Not that it means anything. The irony that the champions and runner-ups to the French league probably won’t be repping the league in Champions League but the less-than-stellar OL (but more so than most of their CL group) will. If they don’t blow it that is.
Maybe it’s time to do that relate Gourcuff and Zidane thing? Honestly, I don’t have much to say about this. All I can say is good luck to us and OM (and also OL, on a relatively smaller note since they need less luck) and hope for the best this Champions League. Also on a side note Blanc, winning UEFA Cup would nice!
The schedule:
Tuesday, September 15, 2009: Juventus Turin – FC Girondins de Bordeaux
Wednesday, September 30, 2009: FC Girondins de Bordeaux – Maccabi Haifa
Wednesday, October 21, 2009: FC Girondins de Bordeaux – Bayern Munich
Tuesday, November 3, 2009: Bayern Munich – FC Girondins de Bordeaux
Wednesday, November 25, 2009: FC Girondins de Bordeaux – Juventus Turin
Tuesday, December 8, 2009: Maccabi Haifa – FC Girondins de Bordeaux
ETA: Someone fix my sidebar because I managed to break it again. Without knowing how I did..

Many people are picking Bordeaux to progress…

I think I’m a fairly pessimistic person to begin with. I mean our play has be really great so far but I don’t think Blanc will be concentrating on CL so much as to lose focus on L1.

I probably sound really stupid, but whats the video of?

This is the legendary Bordeaux-Juventus return game of the Champions’ cup 1985. Juventus had won 3-0 in the first game, and nobody was expecting les Girondins to even come close to qualifying.
Well, they did not qualify indeed, however they managed to threaten Juventus to the end, and won the game 2-0.Posted from

Ahh yes, Amaiic, has summed it up correctly.
Many of us BDX fans still remember that match, a classic for Bordeaux… A record 40,211 spectators were in attendance at the Chaban Delmas, with the current capacity being 34,462 (it was a little more before the renovation). The match took place on 24 April 1985, like Amaiic said. We were coached by Aimé Jacquet, we lost 3 nil in the away leg (the first fixture), no one expected us to come back from suck a defeat but we almost managed to do so. It was the European Champion Clubs’ Cup semi-final, Platini vs. René Girard.

Edit: Sorry, Alain Giresse vs. Michael Platini

I should have a trivia thing where I post videos of goals and you guys try to guess what season it is without seeing the title.
Except I would probably fail myself
Don’t beat yourself up about it Thomas, I don’t think most people know unless they are Bordeaux fans.

Bordeaux doesn’t have much luck in the Champions League, but I really think that will change now. I have said this over and over, but I am just not impressed with Serie A like I was years ago. People would bend over backwards to get into Serie A. Now….not so much.
Also, Bayern Munich isn’t as powerful as they were either. Yes they are still good, but 2 of the last 3 years have been their worse in the last 10 years (I know, numbers, blah).
Still, Bordeaux have a great chance because, unlike Lyon and Marseille, they basically have the same core of players. Lyon drew a great group. I think Marseille is in trouble. And I am not sold on Marseille (but I guess we will see what happens on Sunday).
Still Bordeaux have the positive of having a team that isn’t all new and have already worked together. You can’t say that with Marseille or Lyon.
As a Man City supporter, I can relate to the fact of buying a new team that still isn’t on the same page yet.

Bordeaux were naive last season in UCL. The experience gained since that campaign and the end of Ligue 1 campaign have made Bordeaux strong. As long as Bordeaux carry their confidence and hard work of Ligue 1 to Europe I see them progressing easily.

JLT believes that qualifying for knockout round will be atonement for Juve in 1985 and Bayern in 1996.
“It’s playable. It remains accessible, it must be serious and play without embarrassment. We can believe. It is a return to the past. Juventus (1985), this had not played much. Munich (1996), we had played the finals (UEFA) in the week before playing the field and had not been very good on both legs there was no picture. Maccabi Haifa is not known too, the Israeli teams are always difficult to play, “he conceded as well.

Yeah, JLT is surprisingly confident – so are the players actually. It seems that the champions’ title made a difference in their minds. Hopefully the team won’t be as shy as it was last year in Chelsea.
