I’m Going to Eat Some Roman(isti) Babies
By: Jennifer | December 9th, 2008
I am angry. Very very very angry. So if you’re having a really great day, please don’t read this. If you’re a Roma fan, again. Or if you’re a Blanc fan, please don’t.
Okay, I understand that this group is a very difficult group to do well in, and for Bordeaux to be so close in points going into the last leg was a very pleasant surprise. But all that aside, an opportunity is an opportunity. You do not go into the match thinking that you had a great time in Champions League and that it was nice to be here. You go in there knowing that you have to win this because you want to get further than just the group stage.
Well today, Bordeaux did not play Roma thinking that. Blanc’s formation (4-3-2-1) was obviously too defensive for a game that is either win or die. I understand that you want to keep a clean sheet, but a draw will not get Bordeaux anything. I’m sure Blanc knew that Roma’s defense would be hard to break down. But what did he do? Add some defensive midfielders to the mix of course. Because Roma are SURELY not going to score with our (shitty) defense. (I’m not pertaining to Diarra, of course).
Second. Why did Blanc start Gouffran? If you read this blog you’ll know that I’ve had problems with this problem since time immemorial. I’ve always sort of ignored it, but this obviously impacted the game today. No, Gouffran is NOT of the caliber to take on Champions League games yet. He’s too unexperienced and frankly ineffective. Now if he was the ONLY FUCKING PLAYER left on the bench that can fill the role, sure. But a player like Fernando Cavenaghi should not be the SUBSTITUTE coming on for GOUFFRAN. Cavé may not be a winger, but with him on the pitch for longer than just 34 minutes would have greatly changed the outcome of the game. I mean, just how do you keep the team’s top scorer and (almost) top scorer of the league on the bench? I’l be shocked if he doesn’t pick Tottenham when the time comes.
Third. Jéremy f**king Ménez, I’m coming to get you. And Thumb-sucking Totti, I’m crashing the party. (That’s right. No Totti, NO PARTY.)
Fourth. The typical it’s all the referee’s fault. Some of the fouls were not fouls. Fernando didn’t touch a single hair on Riise’s body and you give them a freekick? Totti’s goal also came off a Ménez-foul-that-ref-didn’t-see moment.
Finally. UEFA cup. HOW THE F**K AM I GOING TO CATCH THAT? I get Champions League with enough trouble already. Bordeaux had better get their game together, because with this kind of performance, they’re not going to be able to keep their top players (Gourcuff, Cavenaghi, Diarra, Chamakh) and things will just go down hill.
(That said, I actually thought that Ducasse, Jurietti, Chalmé and Diarra played very well. And Ramé is just getting old.. Wendel was quiet. Bordeaux just didn’t have a good game like they hoped.)

as a roma fan, i have to say that if there was a way to top the group and take Bordeaux along with us- that would have been ideal. (Dump out that other bad Roman’s team!!)

Blanc’s tactics were surprising. Thought he would try to surprise Roma in the 1st half. Also, who among the Offside women will be the first to admit to the concerted conspiracy to overthrow Beckham and install Gourcuff as the accepted eye tonic?? My (female) vote is all for it, if true.

agreed y the hell does cave never start in crucial matchs? i support roma but i have a soft spot for Bord and i was hoping that we lost and chelsea lost so u guys could qualify. i dont think there will b a exodes tho, Bordeaux can win the league and there is a high chance that they will b in the CL next year, i only think cave will leave, hopfully he goes 4 enough to pay 4 gurcuff

I totally agree…never heard you swear on here before, but it came at a good time. I am very proud of our champions league run this year and the ending was a little disappointing. Something needs to be done about Gouf, he is awful i think we need to find a new formation where we have our two stars (Cave and Chamakh) up front and gourcuff as a center attacking mid. im not a pro on formations but i think its stupid to have Cave off the bench. he is our top scorer and he is coming off the bench… absolutely ridiculous. and if valverde is Rame’s replacement in the future i might have to kill myself.

yeah Fernando is probably thinking spurs sound pretty good right now if it means he’ll be the big kahuna. and the way spurs are playing this season having someone like Cave would only boost the momentum. i would definitely say that this was a huge disappointment and Bordeaux better change the formation up soon. otherwise the pattern of teams axing their managers could come a knockin’

We’ll never fire Blanc, He’ll leave on his own terms or stay and build this team into Ligue 1 champs and UCL regulars.
I’ll post my thoughts later…
Jennifer this is your best article yet. “No Totti, NO PARTY.”

also a Roma fan here, i think Bordeaux’s best defender of the night was actually Diawara. Jurietti was by no means any good, always getting caught chasing and Roma realized to push up your left side because of that. Diawara would do his best to clear but it also left a mis-mark for Planus, who needs to do better. Chalme was alright, not a fan of his physical game but he made it rough for us to advance on your right side. if Roma found the dribble to get past him, Planus would’ve looked worse than Reveillere (Lyon) did 2 seasons ago. watch the highlights again on both goals and you’ll see what i mean. you’re right about Rame being old though, probably could’ve parried Totti’s goal, but then you can also blame Blanc for not starting a better offense. doesn’t seem like the counter is Bordeaux’s style and it forced Gourcuff to run around uninspired.

mimo, I was hoping that Bordeaux would be able to beat Roma today and somehow edge out Chelsea, but that obviously didn’t happen. Settling for UEFA Cup isn’t bad, but I’m just not pleased that we didn’t go into the game with the write formation to take on Roma and to qualify.
Hahaha, I’m all for that. Of all, Gourcuff posts are the ones that get me the most pageviews! I’m going to have a Gourcuff photo for every occasion now.
Marcus, that is something I don’t get AT ALL either. Yes he doesn’t fit — well, CHANGE IT. Winning the league maybe a little far fetched (see my pesimissm working here), but I definitely think we’ll qualify for CL again. The exodus will come sooner or later. This always happens with French teams anyway. I think the plan is to hold on to them until we train/buy more talented young players.
Omar, I’m sorry for swearing ): I wrote the post like 15 minutes after the game ended, and was completely fed up with the tactics that Blanc employed. I may be a little biased with Cavé’s case because he *is* my favourite player in Bordeaux. Don’t worry about Valverde though, because we are looking for replacements in Romania (Coman) and also with Yohann Pele in France.
Drew, I think Blanc’s formations maybe a bit too predictable. I remember always saying “Oh it’s the same formation AGAIN.” Obviously a team like Roma are smart enough to get on that and modify their own lineups. I have to agree with Julien though..Bordeaux will never fire Blanc. He’s the one to bring Bordeaux to 2nd last season and his training/tactics are the things that makes us win matches. If he leaves, that will be because he wants a bigger challenge.
Hahaha Julien, I can’t wait to see what you have to say. I do hope he stays, but I think he needs to be more flexible. Because right now he isn’t going to get his dream team and he just needs to work with what he has.
(I swear to god Roma’s curva has that banner in like EVERY GAME. It’s their wittiest rhyme yet.)

Yes Nik! I knew I forgot about Diawara. Him holding back Totti, Baptista and Ménez was so impressive. I wish he would do this every game. With Jurietti, I feel that he has improved since he returned from his mysterious disappearance, so he does deserve some praise (albeit just for showing up in training). I only wish that Blanc had started Trémoulinas, because Benoît would have helped a lot on the pitch (unlike some).
I think his 4-3-2-1 is a hit or miss kind of thing. Sometimes against certain teams — works, other times..no.I would have opted for a better offense than to play so defensively. Then again, I’m not a world champion so I have nothing to say.
(Musab, I’ve felt the same many many times in my life. But hey, they’re not the eternal city for no reason.)

This wasn’t one of our best matches, you could tell within the very first five mins that we didn’t come in with the same vigor and energy as we did agasint Chelsea, we were very static and a little sloppy from the start. The first half was pretty boring, we kept possesion but we didn’t have good possesion, theres a difference.
Everyone from Wendel, Gouffran, Diarra and even Fernando kept on passing the ball back or side ways no one waas looking to go foward. Gourcuff was probably the only one who looked like he wanted to go foward. I mean, look at Wendel, everytime Jurietti passess the ball to him he would pass it right back, how are we suppoest to win like that? Wendel did nothing the whole game along with Gouffran. Gouffran was a little better than Wendel, he worked hard but thats not enough. Wendel made Juriette’s job more difficult that it should have been, allowing him little opertunities to go foward. Roma looked really comfortable, both wide players did little to run at the full-backs (Riise & Panucci) but Gouffran was the better of the two. We had one cross in the first half from Gourcuff which is a testament of how poor we were, Chamakh with the only oppertunity of the half.
I think there was a slight tactical error from Blanc for deciding to play with one foward. I know I said Cave would have had difficulty to even touch the ball but he would have given more space for Chamakh to make runs and we could have seen the game open up a little. Blanc is a very young coach, he’ll get better with experince. Maybe we could have done with two wingers who are better on the one-on-ones, perhaps Fernendo or Obertan on the left and I would have liked if Jussie was to be fit, he would have been very effective even if he came on in the 60th min.
It’s fustrating watching Gouffran out there, he’s a foward who he can play out wide but he isn’t a winger. He doesn’t have the technique or speed to play out wide and take on full backs. Why, Gouffran? WHY!? We should have purchased Menez…
I think Roma played very well, they closed down space, played with narrow line, were very organized and disciplined. They made it very difficult for midfilders and Chamakh. It was very difficult for Goucuff to create not having the room with the wingers being very ineffective. There were a number of times where Gourcuff got the ball and he was closed down by two player, espacilly with De Rossi always being a very difficult player to deal with. Fernando was quite wastful and didn’t look like his usual self, I would have liked to seen more from him. Most of our passes in the first half were telegraphed (we held the ball way too long sometimes), experince was definitely the difference-maker. Chamakh needed some service out there…
I thought the defensively we were quite decent, Diawara and Planus had some nice last ditch tackels and block, Diawara being the better of the two —Diawara had a man of the match performace for Bordeaux. Chalme was alright, he didn’t look to comfortable facing up to Menez and he had some sloppy fouls but he did alright to contain him, I guess, but his performace going forawrd was destitute and wasteful. Juliette I thought was alright, he only got caught out of position on the first goal but other than that he did his job to the best of what Wendel would allow him. Planus, that fucker! He’s always sleeping. He left Brigghi completely alone on that goal and was out to high on the second.
There were a few thing that we needed to improve on but that come with experince and quality: like being more direct, making runs to meet crosses, releasing the ball quicker. We lacked conviction and we were in effective in the final third of the pitch. I’m sure if Blanc stay a few more years we’ll imporve and He’ll imporve as a Manager. He needs more experince before he leaves, he’s still quite young. Balance and security is important, but he has to know when to sacrifice security at back to go get results. I remember Deschamps did that well.
For our first run in a while we didn’t do too bad in our group, it was always going to be hard with Chelsea and Roma. We played well, bar the 4-0 chelsea game but it’s not over yet, we still have the UEFA cup!!
Btw, I love “Fourth. The typical it’s all the referee’s fault… Fernando didn’t touch a single hair on Riise’s body.”
Jennifer, instead of “Going” out “to Eat Some Roman(isti),” (Giallorossi) “Babies” you should consider helping Gourcuff in making Bordeaux babies, he’s single you know.

Pierre Ducasse & Florian Marange could be on there way out…
Blanc said Thursday he’ll keep his key players” during the winter transfer window, leaving the door open to the players who have played little this season (which will not be necessarily replaced).
He esentially ruled out the possible exit of Fernando Cavenaghi, “I do not want major players to go… Having a player who score goals, I would rather keep that let him go.
He didn’t talk about bringing any specific players in but it was left as an open possibilty…

Julien, I will comment on your comment when I have time XD
but interestingly..
“Yesterday, the airport Fiucimino of Rome, the Girondins had to wait an hour to retrieve their baggage, rolling pavement supposed to deliver his own making. Was it already is a sign of psychological warfare? Fact remains Triaud that the President personally intervened, is mounted on the wide ribbon of black rubber and returned in the hold baggage to uproot any one before pressing a button without the miracle occurs. ”From France Football..
(and Christian Gourcuff was there to watch his son. How cute.)
