Wendel in Trouble?

By: Jennifer | August 27th, 2008

Cavenaghi, who is fantastic and not in trouble.

Not everything that came out of the well deserved 2-0 win against Nantes is great. Cavenaghi’s 2nd goal of the season is great, Fernando’s added strike is great too, but Wendel might be in trouble after fracturing Nante midfielder Djamel Abdoun’s fibula in a rough tackle. Well, what’s the problem? You be the judge.

I was about to go ballistic because tinypic is down and there was no where to upload. It’s a bit jittery because I was trying to cut down the file size by reducing the number of frames and then I forgot to prolong the other frames. Technically, I just fail. Don’t even bother to read this.

Bad foul? I think it was just a bad accident (by this time I’ve watched it at least 25 times). Wendel was clearly trying to get to the ball. I think he if had just apologized immediately instead of walking away, this controversy might have been avoided.

What they said:

Abdoun: I am angry … This tackle was unnecessary. I am back in goal. It’s pure wickedness. And Wendel did not even apologize…

Wendel: I’ve broken (his) leg? I am sorry. On the action I have sought to tackle the ball … I went to see Abdoun after the match to apologize and tell him that I had not made explicit. He said: “Look at my foot. I misunderstood. In addition you do you’re not excused on the coup. “And then he shook hands. I wish him to recover quickly. I will call him, as Reveillère have done with me. (Referring to this piece of work here by Reveillere, which broke Wendel’s ankle. I lol’ed when he said “nobody died”)

And then,

Abdoun: (After sweet sweet Wendel calls him) He swore he had not made explicit. His appeal made me warm to the heart because it seemed really sincere. I will forget. The most important thing is to treat me.

Triaud: First, I regret his injury. Then, contrary to what Mr. Abdoun, Bordeaux had not been “a film” after the injury by Wendel Réveillère. The club has accepted the arbitrator’s decision on this part. He never called for sanctions or said a word about the Lyonnais. It must absolutely not compare the fault of game Lyonnais and the accident occurred between Wendel and Abdoun. At any time there is aggression in the back of Nantes. Wendel plays the ball and do not touch with his legs. He falls over with the weight of his body.

Sounds like it’s over? Yet 70% of people over at football365.fr still think Wendel should be suspended. But then again most of France support Lyon, and Bordeaux being a title threat runs on the well greased gear that is Wendel.

In other news, Chamakh is back in training, Henri Saivet is not (left foot injury, right after his 5 minute debut in L1), and Paul Baysse goes back to Sedan. Sorry if you were hoping to read a review of the game against Nantes. I like drama.

Oh man, that’s horrible. Poor Abdoun. You’re probably right, that had Wendel shown concern immediately reactions would be different. But, GOD that’s hard to watch — ow, ow, ow. (And I am so sorry I just watched that Reveillere tackle. Jesus.)

Ouch. This is almost as bad as the Martin Taylor tackle on Eduardo da Silva. Almost… except over in England 70% of people thought Taylor should be suspended for life, killed, tarred and feathered, etc. Ok not 70% but Taylor recieved a heck of a lot of death threats.

it looked as though he was going for the ball..maybe he took a dangerious angle on him but i think people are more angry about the injury than the the tackle itself…wendel didnt even get carded for the tackle im pretty sure. but a fractured fibia was definitly not wendels intention

Maybe it’s just broken for me then :\ I’m rather anal about these things, I guess. It sends shivers up my spine watch them (ahh, sorry about the Réveillère thing too ): )

I agree with you Corey, but you can’t deny that Lyon has the biggest fan base both in and out of France..

Nick, I think the de Silva case was a heck of a lot more graphic. I was pretty close to vomiting seeing his foot go like that…I’m kinda glad that Wendel isn’t getting death threats *whew*. I guess it’s good that French fans aren’t that sentimental.

Omar, I think everyone is pissed about the injury, but I guess sometimes bad things happen and they’ll just have to take it. I just wish Abdoun a speedy recovery..
