Welcome to Bordeaux

By: Jennifer | July 11th, 2008

(I’ll admit it — the white kits look pretty good.)

(Sorry for the lame title, I’m terrible at coming up with them.) Anyway, a proper self introduction. My name is Jennifer and I’ll be repping Bordeaux from today on! Les Girondins are a force to be reckoned with — of course they deserve a blog about them. Last season, they finished 2nd in L1, and have clinched a Champions League spot with the normal contenders Lyon and Marseille.

The transfer season has not been too busy for Bordeaux, but the two big signings this summer are Yoann Gourcuff (loan from AC Milan) and Yoan Gouffran (€6.5 million from Caen). As well Wendel, who was voted best Bordelais of last season, has also signed a two year extention. Right now, the only rumour is the arrival of Toulousain Jérémy Mathieu, who is willing to go against Toulouse to come to Bordeaux.

Bordeaux played one friendly today, against L2 club Ajaccio, beating them 2-1. Goals are courtesy of Bellion (penalty) and Alonso. I didn’t get to catch this game (thanks to summer school), but Gouffran and Gourcuff made a good showing.

Friendly Schedule:

July 16 : Girondins de Bordeaux – LB Châteauroux
July 19 : Girondins de Bordeaux – OM
July 23 : Girondins de Bordeaux – Toulouse FC
July 27 : Girondins de Bordeaux – FC Lorient
July 30 : Girondins de Bordeaux – Stade Rennais

Hahaha, I hope so! Bordeaux has a good academy, and they did great last season (before Lyon’s academy). Right now though, the two biggest stars are foreign (Wendel and Cavenaghi).

Even with the KIA sign the all white kit looks really good…(The design on the front looks like the napkins kids are made to wear while eating, but is very classy if you don’t think that all the time :D )..good work by Puma..all the best Bordeaux!

The white shirt above is a training top; the white kit has a more prominent scapulaire (see http://91.121.145.229/shopManager00010010.asp?prod=10326).

It isn’t bad at all, though this (http://91.121.145.229/shopManager00010010.asp?prod=10330) is a crime against the football gods.

I actually really like the Champions League kits. It is leagues better than the kits of the ’90s. Those gk kits ARE a fashion crime.

Is it just me? or are the training kits not better than the actual kit??? maybe they made it that way so that folks can see that feature from far off….is this scapulaire a Bordeaux thing??..at least, I’ve never seen it anywhere else

LOL Mat, you’re right — the training kit might actually be the best looking kit out of all of them. Yes, it is quite a Bordeaux thing (http://www.scapulaire.com/ –> this is a Bordeaux fansite)

Andrew, I’ll try to look for that. I know they’ve been posted already I just need to find it.

Hi Jennnifer, good to see there are more foreign Girondins fans! And.. are you Dutch too?
Anyway, I’m supporting since 1999 and had myself a Bordeaux website too. Unfortunately I was lacking on time to update it regularly but it’s still a good source of player information. If I can help you with information, don’t hesitate to contact me. Good luck with the blog and ALLEZ BORDEAUX!

Hi Xander! I am Canadian :) (if you see in my profile, I’ve been an Inter fan for the longest time. I’ve only recently [2 years ago] ventured into L1, unfortunately.)
I’ll be sure to ask you if I need anything! set, my co-blogger is a Bordeaux native, so I’m sure the two of you will help me learn about this club :D
