Round 1: Lyon vs Bordeaux

By: Jennifer | November 16th, 2008

Unnecessary, but completely called for.

Despite what Inara may have led you to believe, it won’t actually be Inara vs Jennifer. I’m off to the grand opening of Frank Gehry’s new and improved Art Gallery of Ontario tomorrow, and will probably not return until about 4 or 5 Eastern. However, I can assure you that the game will be a-mazing. Steams are available.

Le groupe : Valverde, Olimpa – Chalmé, Diawara, Jurietti, Placente, Planus, Trémoulinas – Diarra, Fernando, Gourcuff, Wendel, Sertic, Traoré – Bellion, Cavenaghi, Chamakh, Gouffran, Obertan.

-Mathieu Valverde is feeling much better, and says that the club can count on him and that he is in shape and ready. Blah blah cliché stuff about optimism and taking all three points. The interview is here if you want to read it.

-Of course, Lyon’s NOM NOM NOM Gourcuff have lead to Triaud’s (witty) comments.Buying Gourcuff and then selling him to Lyon for 6 times as much? I approve this plan. Blanc says that if Lyon is really interested in Gourcuff, it’s in his interest to give them a good game, so Lyon will want him more :D

-There has been rumours about Blanc not wanting to renew his contract with Bordeaux, and that he wants to coach a better club. Triaud wants to keep him, but says that 20 years of Blanc might not be possible, and that he will let him go when necessary.

-“I am not the new Zidane. I am Yoann Gourcuff and that’s all” - Gourcuff
So let’s stop, okay?

-What’s up with Franck? Jurietti has been reportedly missing for a few days now. It might be just personal problems, something about hotelsTriaud seems worried.

Benzema wil not score today, Gourcuff will have two assists, Cavenaghi will score two if he plays and Wendel will secure the game with a freekick in the backof the net. Fred will score LO only goal.

    Final Score: OLyonnais 1 - 3 G.Bordeaux

    HT. 2 - 0 OL

We dominated this half yet OL scored 2 goal. We should have done alot better with our opprertunities.
Diarra is playing well tho, and so is Wendel. I haven’t seen Gouffran at all.

Hopefully we can turn this around, It’s only HT. 45mins to go.

Well the difference in quality was quite evident in the first half. Wendel has been really poor. I have only heard about his displays but never seen them. Gouffran has been quiet but has done good whenever called upon. Gourcuff has been brilliant. Chamakh has been doing everything fine except for showing up in the box. Everybody else in my opinion have been at least good if not brilliant.

The defense was undone by some quality moves and a shot. Lyon just showed why no one can can beat them to the title. Quality. Bordeaux lacked that in final third and Lyon have been decisive in that final third.

Still I would say Blanc has done a good job of preparing Bordeaux for the match. Some players just haven’t responded that well.

I wouldn’t say it’s a difference in qulity but effectiveness in putting the ball behind the net. I think Wendel played alright, He did well to find his opertunities but is finishing was just poor. Chamakh usually plays well but the bot just doesn’t know how to find opertunities, he links up well which is effective but he has to do more in the area.

And Gouffran, I don’t even want to talk about him. He’s always invisable.

I think if we can get 2 top qualiity CBs (instead of using Planus) well be fine. Both Diawara and Planus have average positioning.

Blanc always sets up his matches very well its always individual mistakes or a lack of finishing up top. However, I was a good game and I’m not to disappointed.

I hope Orbatan can start blossoming into a world class player. He has the Quality and the tools, he just to raw.

Thanks Aditya and Julien for the updates. I’m going to watch the game soon! I think you guys pointed out the overlying problems of the team. Blanc insists on using Gouffran and I simply do not understand his reasoning. And of course the Chamakh’s inability to PERFORM in the box is depressing ): I agree though, if he is going to play Gouffran, it might be better to experiment with Obertan or even the CFA players.

    Augh, Blanc, why won’t you sign the extension. Is it because Bordeaux are not winning and thus you need a better challenge?! ;_;

I read an interview of Blanc (I’ll dig up the link), and it sounded like he was defeated more than anything else. He said that part of the reason he wasn’t sure about extending was that as long as Lyon maintain their overwhelming financial and political power, Bordeaux will not be able to truly compete with them. It’s two years now that he saw his team decisively lose to Lyon despite having better tactics and more control of the game, and I guess he’s wondering what the point of staying in France is if it’ll always be a race for second place.

It’s true, I was discussing that about a few days ago with a few of my friends. However, if a big club dosen’t come knocking I don’t think he’ll be leaving (unless it’s for a segnifinally richer club in Greese or Turkey). As long as there no offer to him from now to April, I can see him staying for another year or so.

Bordeaux has the ability to take the league but we don’t have the decisive players OL have or the prestige to attract big name players. The most Blanc can hope for is for Bordeaux to purchase young player like Gouffran or Gourcuff for cheap or poromote potentail stars like Obertan and hope they can become great players. But then trying to keep these players from big clubs is a also a problem because they grow ambisous and GB dont have the finacial power to keep them.

It’s completely understandable that he would look towards a bigger club. Then again, Blanc even as a player has always waited untill the end of the season before he extended a contrat. Never during or even in the winter transfer period.

Yeah, I also read that article Inara. I do see where he’s going with his career decisions, but obviously it’s not the best for Bordeaux.

Jennifer: I have a question: Is Juan Pablo Francia still on your squad? He’s not on the official club roster, but everywhere else, he’s listed as still being with Bordeaux.

Hi John, Francia is actually on loan back to a club in Argentina, which explains why you see him still with Bordeaux but not on the rooster.

Bordeaux is also (apparently) in talks with Dani Coman’s club, Rapid Bucharest.

I never herd of Dani Coman…
Yohan Cabaye would be a good addition but there’s alot of competion for him, I hope we get him tho.

Valverde again with a game costing mistake. I’m getting tired of him. I only watched the first half —we clearly were controlling the game but didn’t do enough with the possesion we had. Gourcuff also put on a show with some of his tricks…

He’s a Romanian GK, I think Bordeaux are pursuing him as a 2nd keeper to replace Valverde. I have no idea how well he plays either. I’ll go and inquire about him..

It seems that among all the clubs after him, Bordeaux is Cabaye’s preference. But then they always say that..I would love to have him though. It will be quite a formidable midfield and attack.

Do you think Ramé will come back against Chelsea? The news say that he’ll be fit by then, and I’m guessing that even if he is not 100%, Blanc will probably start him anyway. I’m not so sure about Cavenaghi though, LOL.

I hope we sign Pele tho, he would be 1st choice over Rame pushing him one spot down the order. Maybe then we could off load Valverede.

Rame has resumed training, so as far as I know he should have had a fitness test today to see if he travels. I’m crossing my fingers for him. I wouldn’t like to see Valverde in net again.

Knowing Blanc we will not see any surprises, Cave will most likely start from the bench. I expect the regular 4-2-3-1 with Chamahk leading the line.

    Beautiful people in Bordeaux

Four players made their return to Girondins training Sunday.

Good news for Laurent Blanc. Two days before the matches against Chelsea, four Bordeauxs made their return, yesterday in training. Among them, three potential starts: Ulrich Rame, Gabriel Paletta and Jussiê. The young Mathieu Saunier (18) also joined the Gironde.

If we do sell Cavenaghi, it will help fund the Gourcuff purchase and maybe we can purchase a few more player on top of that but it would be a huge loss. I love that Cave, he’s a great finisher. Very important for us in the league.

I hope he doesn’t want to leave.

Oh yes, I think you may already know but Mathieu Saunier is a highly rated center-back with alot of quality, He can be a potential replacment for Planus in a few years. He played for the U-17 and performed quite well.

I was not aware Bordeaux was trying to bring in Dănuţ Coman. I do not know how much they are looking to invest but Romania has a good group of young goalkeeper from Romania such as Steaua Bucureşti’s Cezar Lungu and Timişoara’s Costel Pantilimon.
