Bordeaux - Marseille, the Classic
By: Jennifer | July 19th, 2008It wasn’t a bad game, a lot of missed chances. Les Girondins didn’t quite impress. They were “okay” at best.

Olympique de Marseille 1 (Cissé 49′) - 0 Girondins de Bordeaux
I didn’t get to catch the first half, but my first reaction is simply how ridiculous Ben Arfa looks with his ears taped…and how Blanc should stop eating his pen. (Please pardon the present tense, I started when the game was still in 70′)
Blanc made a lot of substitutions in the second half (as usual). I’m really excited to watch Sertic play, actually. He looks really nervous (he’s not bad at all, just a little jittery.) I’m awed by the amount of technical skill Obertan is showing (I know I’m just repeating but, he is fast.) Chamakh also looks quite good in front of goal. His reaction time is a little slow though — he takes too long to get the crosses in, giving OM’s defenders time to get in place. Gourcuff is simply solid. Freekicks are taken very well and on target, a lot of good work in midfield. (He will not earn my praise just yet.) Valverde is also subbed in during the second half. I can’t tell how well he is playing because OM aren’t getting many chances on goal. Trémoulinas and Florian Marange also played, and they were okay.
I don’t have much to say about the game. Bordeaux had many chances through freekicks and corners, but couldn’t beat the defending of OM. I also noticed that a lot of the prosession is lost in midfield — they need to tighten up the passing. There’s obviously a lot of work still to be done before the start of the season. Cavenaghi will be back (finally!) and all things that are not right will be right once again.
There will be pictures once I find them.

Ears taped like he was playing rugby? Because if so, I need pictures!

I think Gourcuff was better than solid; and I think he’s going to be a hell of a player for you guys this year. If he turns out to demonstrate any of the promise he hinted at while at Rennes, I think he could really help this team. I fully expect him to go either back to Milan or another “big” club (pardon me, Boureaux) and start the following season.

I am sure he will be exemplary for Bordeaux this year. I just don’t want the squad to depend on him so much, knowing that Milan will want him back. He brings a lot of good qualities to the team, but I know I’ll hate to see him leave. There’s no way Bordeaux will be able to afford his price tag once he’s done here.

Oh, ok, so it was just earring tape. Damn, I was picturing something like what the guy on the far left here has going on …

I’m really glad to hear that Gourcuff is going well. Yay Yoann! You have no idea how crazy a lot of us Milan fans were going at his lack of playing time…he never really got a chance to display his talent here(of which there’s loads)

The first half was actually pretty good for Bordeaux, with a lot of nice short pass movement. Gourcuff also shot a very nice free kick but Mandanda was on the trajectory.

I don’t think I’ll ever hesitate to say that Mandanda is class. I love to watch one touch football. (It seems like that was the case in the 1H anyway. Damn.) I think they slowed down a bit, and with all the younger CFA players, they might have lost pace in the 2H..

It was very hot over in Agen, about 90 degrees according to the commentary. The heat, intensive physical training, and substitutions didn’t help making the second half very attracting.

Ha! I was getting ready to tell you we needed pictures of Ben Arfa with his ears taped, but I see Martha beat me to it!

It has been said Chamack wants to leave for an English club. But so far, only Lille (L1) is interested. It’s been a few years now that he’s expressed his interest to leave, but not many teams want him.
